Weekend Brew

This weekend, we’ll talk about, faster decision-making, remote work, and Star Wars. Also, have a look at my recent blog post on why OKRs are far superior to KPI’s. Enjoy!

Leadership

FirstRound discusses the value of speed in business, including challenging the assumption of why something could be done tomorrow or next week, and instead ask if it can be done today, or in an hour. The article also discusses the merits of making decisions faster. If a decision is not that important or can be easily reversed, it does not need a long conversation.

HBR reviews the merits and drawbacks of offering mental health apps to employees. It describes how an app may be a good complement to traditional therapy, not a replacement for it. I find the idea of mental health apps fascinating, and I’m interested to see how that space continues to evolve.

Seth Godin published a brief article that describes the end of the office. He reviews how the office evolved from being a single room nearby the factory floor to a more pervasive concept. With its origins in mind, Seth reminds us how the advances in remote work technology have outmoded the need for the traditional office. Not a new argument, but Seth’s perspective has a unique twist to it.

Miscellany

Brainwriting is an alternative to brainstorming that encourages those too shy to speak up during a traditional brainstorming session to weigh in on their ideas. It involves writing ideas on pieces of paper and passing the piece of paper around, allowing others to either add to the original idea or write new ideas. I think this is a great technique for getting a more diverse set of perspectives than you would traditionally get for a typical creative session.

Star Wars recently published an explanation for how Palpatine was brought back to life in The Rise of Skywalker. Many are frustrated by this, as they feel this should have been explained in the movie. I actually liked the movie, but also found it a bit rushed. I think this explanation opens up many avenues for spinoffs or additional storytelling. And I can’t get enough Star Wars content, so I’m not too bothered by this.
